From Obscurity to Leader – How Poland Changed the Balance of Power in the Baltic Sea? Poland is dynamically developing its potential in maritime trade, with the Port of Gdansk playing a key role in this process. Over the past dozen years, the country has overtaken all EU countries in terms of transshipment in the Baltic Sea, and Gdansk has advanced to the top of European ports. Will Poland be able to maintain its leading position in the Baltic Sea in the coming years? Back in 2004, when Poland joined the European Union, domestic ports had little significance in international trade. Transshipments were smaller than in Latvian ports, and transport development was mainly based on road connections. Until 2009, the situation remained largely unchanged – the volume of transshipments did not grow, and the importance of Polish ports decreased. The breakthrough came in 2010. From that moment on, transshipments began to grow rapidly, and the share in the European market systematically increased. Poland successively overtook other Baltic countries – in 2010 Germany, in 2019 Sweden, in 2021 Denmark, in 2022 Finland, and in 2023 the total value of transshipments from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The biggest beneficiary of this development is Gdansk. In 2008, it ranked only 64th in terms of transshipments in Europe, in 2013 it advanced to 41st, in 2018 to 23rd, and in 2023 it was already 7th in the entire European Union. In the Baltic Sea, it is today the largest port among EU member states and one of the most important in the entire region. Maritime trade is of strategic importance for economic development. Ports provide connections with key markets around the world, attract investment and create new jobs. Maintaining this growth momentum will be crucial to further strengthening its position in international trade.
